The
Sino-Africa Forum on Cooperation：The Successful Implementation of the Concept of“Harmonious world”

Enhancing
friendship, talking about cooperation freely, and discussing development
actively---solemn, warm and fruitful Sino-Africa Forum on Cooperation in
Beijing ended successfully. This summit is a harmonious grand gathering of
China and Africa as well as a successful implementation of the concept of “harmonious
world”.
Just as a
journalist from Ethiopia said, “The new generation of Chinese leaders proposed
a concept of building a harmonious society, and The Sino-Africa Forum on
Cooperation is just a historical meeting to build a harmonious world. The Beijing
summit will explore the bright future for the common progress and prosperity of
both Africa and China!”
Building
a harmonious world requires nations and regions to reach a consensus on
important issues such as peace and development.
Both
China and Africa have long history and brilliant civilization as well as the
same or similar struggling experience towards national independence and
liberation. Both sides all recognize the political identity of “the third
world” and “developing country”. They face the same goal and the same mission
of development as well as the call for peace, development and cooperation. All
these are the requisition for the consensus on many important issues involving
the world peace and development reached by the two sides.
At this
summit, leaders from china and Africa fully exchanged ideas and reached a lot
of important consensus. As the two concrete fruits of this summit, ‘The
Declaration of Sino-Africa Forum on Cooperation’ and ‘Sino-Africa Forum on
Cooperation---Beijing’s Plan of Action (from 2007---2009)’ are the guiding
documents that gather both sides’ common will.
Building
a harmonious world requires persistent mutual respect, equality, and mutual
benefit for nations and regions while communication.
China
always upholds that all nations, whether small or not, are equal. It respects all
the nations, regardless of the national power. The Declaration stresses that 1.
Friendly cooperation should be carried out on the basis of the five principles
of peaceful coexistence and of all the international codes upholding
multilateralism and the democratization of international relations 2. Respect
and guard the diversity of the world, and every nation, regardless of the size
of territory and national power, should respect and treat each other equally to
live in harmony 3. Different civilizations and development modes should be
taken as references, be promoted by each other and co-exist in harmony. On this
basis, leaders attending the conference vowed with solemnity to build and
develop a new type of strategic partnership between China and Africa on the
basis of political mutual trust, economical mutual benefit and cultural
exchanges and learning.
Building
a harmonious world also requires persistent mutual support and mutual help
between countries and regions. On one hand, the harmonious development of the
whole world can’t do without the harmonious development of Sino-Africa relationship;
while on the other hand, the harmonious development of the two sides will also
surely provide strong momentum for the harmonious development of the world. At
present, one of the most important factors that lead to an Inharmonious world
is the increasingly widening gap of development between southern and northern
regions. To solve this problem, we should on one hand increase the north-south
dialogue and cooperation, and on the other hand increase south-south
cooperation to unite all the developing countries and pave a way for the common
development. China always attaches great importance to south-south cooperation
with developing countries including African countries. The successful Beijing
summit proves that China is willing to join hands with African countries to
shake off poverty, share the sweet fruit of development and achieve common
prosperity.
Friendship, peace, cooperation
and development are the main theme of this Beijing summit and source of power
to push forward the harmonious Sino-Africa ties. This summit has enriched the
concept and practice of building a harmonious world, which will surely be written
in the history book of development in Sino-Africa ties or even of China’s
development on foreign diplomatic ties. China is the biggest developing country
in the world, and establishing friendly cooperation ties with Africa –the
homeland to most developing countries will be bound to make new and bigger
contribution to the building of a harmonious world.

Kofi Annan says farewell to his UN colleagues when his tenure
comes to an end

In the noon on 20 Nov, the great meeting hall of Palais
des Nations in Geneva were filled with participants. UN General Secretary Kofi
Annan , whose term of office will end soon, came here to say farewell to the
whole staff working in Geneva.
When Annan, together with his wife, entered the hall,
everyone at present gave them a warm applause. This time, he didn’t go on
stage, but instead sat in the middle of the first row with his wife.
The chief officer of the Associated office in Geneva
delivered a short speech, saying that UN General Secretary Annan has come all
the way here to say goodbye to his UN colleagues.
Annan, who was in a dark western-style cloth, stood up and
said while walking:” this is an exciting moment for me. In 1962, I began my
career in the United Nations just here when a lot of people at present haven’t
been born yet.” Laughter was heard in the hall. “I have seen the hope and
future of UN from you, 
and you will continue
UN’s career.”
Starting from his work in the World Health Organization
located in one corner of this palais, Annan also spoke of the ribbon-cutting
ceremony for the completion of the third building of WHO, and said with a
humorous tone:” you can see ‘the swelling of bureaucratism’ from that, which
demonstrates that we are facing more and more challenges and that we have more
and more work to do for the world”.
When talking about the threat the
world is facing, Annan cited poverty, environmental deterioration, severe
epidemic, international crime, terrorism and large-scale destructive weapons as
examples. Because different regions always face different threats, every nation
should take the threats faced by other countries into consideration while trying
to find a solution to its own and cooperate to cope with them.
He pointed out that at present,
international law and human rights have been severely challenged, and some
countries even violate human right in the fight against terrorism. He thought
that anti-terrorism campaign shouldn’t be carried out at the expense of
violating human rights and confining individual freedom. He expressed that UN
should protect international law, human rights, and freedom from being violated
in anti-terrorism campaign.
Annan also talked about severe
changes for UN, such as UN’s reform, the peace-keeping mission and great
threats posed for WHO: the prevention and control of AIDS, bird flu, and SARS
etc. He also hoped to continue his contribution for the international community
after retirement.
After the impromptu speech, Annan
answered questions from his colleagues. When answering the question of what are
the best and the worst thing he has done during his tenure, Annan said that he
has been struggling to get rid of the inequality and poverty in the world in
his lifetime, and the best thing is that part of his wishes have already been
listed in the millennium goal of UN’s development. The worst thing is that he
hasn’t been able to prevent the Iraqi war, and he personally didn’t support nor
agree on the starting of this war. What he could only do is to accept the
restoration after the Iraqi war. Besides, the death of the UN ambassador to
Iraq made him extremely miserable.
The one -hour farewell conference
soon came to a close. Annan, together with his wife, walked across the hall
with applause and then shook hands with his colleagues standing along both
sides of the corridor while many staff dropped tears.

Thanksgiving Day
The legend of the festival
Thanksgiving is the most
authentic American -style festival. It has the closest relationship with the
early history of America.
In 1620, some pilgrims took
a boat called “The Flower in May” to America to seek religious freedom. After
two years’ hard life at sea, they finally arrived at a place which has later
become the present Plymouth, Massachusetts. In the first winter, more than half
of the immigrants died from hunger and epidemic, and survivors began to sow
seeds in the next spring. They have been greatly expecting harvest during the
whole summer, and clearly knew the upcoming harvest will determine if they can
survive. Then, they had an unexpected harvest. Therefore, people decided to
choose a date to thank God’s grace. Many years later, American President
announced that the fourth Thursday in 
November every year would be Thanksgiving Day. The
date has been kept until now.
The Celebration of the Festival
The mode of the celebration hasn’t changed at all for so many years. The
bumper family dinner is prepared several months ago. People can have apples,
oranges, millets, walnuts and grapes. Besides these, raison pudding, pancake
with petty meat and other food are also served. One of the most amazing and
attractive dishes are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have always been the
most traditional and popular food on this occasion.
Every one approves that the Thanksgiving feast must be served with roast
